Barbara Walters and the 100 "Great" women of the 20th Century

Jane Fonda is included in the 100 "Great" women of the 20th Century.

Following is one letter objecting:

Dear Ms. Walters:

To the increasing numbers of outraged complaints of Americans, including many who served honorably in Vietnam, I add my own.

When the American Association of University Women honored Jane Fonda, I wrote it off as naive or (cynically) as an attempt to elicit from Ms. Fonda a generous financial gift.

However, when ABC agreed (with you?) to honor Jane Fonda as one of the one-hundred "great" women of the century, I was chagrined, amazed and downright disgusted. Surely your archive of Vietnam-era file film must include the infamous clip of Fonda sitting at a North Vietnamese antiaircraft artillery piece. Surely you are aware of her audio tape, played over and over on the PA systems in camps where brave Americans were being tortured as POWs. And surely you are aware that Fonda decried as "liars" those same brave American POWs when they returned to Freedom in 1973, declaring that we had NOT been treated humanely or leniently by our captors, as Fonda had reported both here at home and radio broadcasts in Hanoi.

Finally, surely there are truly great American women who are NOT "media personalities"! I trust that your vision is not so narrow as to exclude the really remarkable women of this century (perhaps some of the 88 American women POWs of WW II, or Dr. (Army colonel-select) Rhonda Cornum held as a POW in Iraq and much honored as a medical pioneer).

Surely, you can do better than to select the likes of Jane Fonda as a "great" American woman!

In sincere hopes that you will reconsider,

Giles Norrington, CAPT, USN (Retired)
